Rules of Engagement

1.
Any school member able to fulfill basic yachting criteria is allowed to join School Sailing Club (able to swim, physically fit, suitable clothing including life jacket)
2. Equipment: The school sailing club owns six 420’s: and one support boat.
3. Programme:
a Training one evening per week in Spring, two evenings per week in Summer.
b. Emphasis for sailors on individual programmes in Spring (Term 4) (personal Opti, P, Starling, Laser, try not to have timetable conflicts)
c. Emphasis on Teams in Summer (Term 1) with more weekend events
d.There will be regular Teams regattas –at about monthly intervals
4. Selection of members of School Team to go to Teams Nationals

a. Skippers
i. Strong individual sailing programme & experience
ii. Attendance & nthusiasm at training & events
iii. Performance at regattas
iv. Experience –Teams results
v. Impression on club/school days

b. Crew
i. Same as skippers
ii. Weight & age

c. If in the racing squad to go to the Nationals, you are expected to be totally committed to the School Team. This is a major time commitment !

Do not expect to merely arrive at school sailing and immediately become a representative or skipper in the school team, teams sailing requires considerable training and skills that are different from, and complimentary to, fleet sailing. The school emphasis is on Teams sailing, it does not offer a comprehensive course in sailing and is not a substitute for normal weekend yacht club activities for keen sailors.
5. Parents are required to help with Shore duties, transport, fund raising, boat repairs etc as able.
6. Costs:
Fee for belonging to the school team $100 per season You are expected to take part in fund raising also Total costs are usually about $500 per season –this is mostly regatta entry and class association fees, travel and accommodation fees and boat maintenance. If you will have any trouble meeting these costs, please discuss (in confidence) with a member of the management committee.
7. Fleet sailing of school 420’s may be allowed -particularly in summer.

a. There will be additional cost of $40 per boat per racing day paid in advance, minimum cost $400 per term, plus an agreement to make good all damage and a bond of $500 per boat.
b. If necessary, damage will be repaired and on-charged, irrespective of liability –ie boats to be treated as if they are your own.
c. Only experienced skippers who have shown good commitment to the school team, including coaching of juniors, good attendance records, high degrees of competence and are capable of, and planning to have a good go at, YouthSail will be considered.
d. Please note that there are some fleet events, which are regarded as relevant School Teams activities, where some of the above conditions will not apply –eg Northland & Auckland Schools Regattas.
8. Damage to School boats may be billed to the individual if it is regarded as willful or careless, and definitely will be in the case of damage during individual fleet sailing, irrespective of whose fault it was.
