Part of the Auckland Heritage Festival, the Classic Yacht and Launch Exhibition takes place in the Karanga Plaza (opposite the ANZ Viaduct Events Centre) at the Viaduct Harbour. Open Sat 3 and Sun 4 October 10am-4pm with free admission, great for all ages. The Tino Rewa Trust is organising the display for the Auckland Heritage Festival which will be honouring sailing ico, designer and boat builder, Des Townson. The finest examples of Townson’s legacy will be on display so you can enjoy beautifully presented yachts rafted up, sailing dinghies and informative displays. (Look out for SYC sailor Romilly Brickell, there with her Townson yacht 'Rationale', representing the 25' Townson design). Des Townson was the creative genius behind some of the most well known classes in New Zealand sailing, including the Starling, Zephyr, Mistral and Pied Piper, with about 3,500 yachts and boats carrying the Townson name. He died on 16 October 2008. Auckland Heritage Festival More than 180 events will feature over the three weeks of the Auckland Heritage Festival between 26 September and 11 October 2015.

Matakana Marine /Volvo Penta Cruising Programme with SYC - something for everyone!
The scene is set. The sponsors are engaged. All it needs now is for SYC members to finish the painting/ scraping/ renovating/ polishing and to get ready for a season of fun on the water.
The cruising programme is designed so that everyone can take part no matter what kind of boat they own. Some Club members own yachts, some own launches, some own “runabouts” or fishing boats, and some are centreboarders. All members are assumed to have some interest in cruising so the cruising programme is aimed at providing venues and occasions when all members can get together socially at an anchorage. The constant is that there will be a BBQ and awarding of sponsors’ spot prizes on the beach at every cruising event. How and when you get there is up to you but for the yachties there will be a cruise from a starting point off the Algies Bay reef around a designated course. The details of the course will be set either in the week before the event or via VHF channel 77 on the day. If the cruising course has to be shortened for any reason this will be notified via VHF channel 7. The sponsors of the cruising programme are:
Please support our sponsors. They are supporting us in a very generous way. The first cruising event will be during Labour Day weekend Sat 24-Mon 26 October. Yachties will cruise over to Kawau on Saturday 24 October but the BBQ will be on Sunday 25 October. The reason is that the Kawau Boating Club bar/restaurant opens on Saturday 24 October and it is assumed that some SYC members will want to support the KBC. The full cruising programme is set out below and is in the new SYC Handbook. (page 37-39). Look at the dates and put them in your diary. Note the event on 12 December, when it is hoped that we can encourage some of our younger sailors from the Centreboard Division to sail over to Kawau in their Optis (or whatever) to join us for the night and have fun at the pre-Xmas breakfast BBQ in the morning. We may need some volunteers to host a young sailor or two for the night so be warned. We will be ringing around. Please ring Conway Stewart ph 425 5892 or email conway@pl.net if you want to know anything about the cruising programme. Cruising/Social Programme:
Clipper Round the World Race Twelve combined male/female teams left London on 30th August for the 11-month 40,000 nautical mile circumnavigation around the world. Each Clipper 70 yacht is identical (23M long, 5.65m beam, combined sail area of 1,530sq M etc). Each has between 51-61 crew-members - not all aboard at the same time we hope - and each crew member will apparently spend approximately 504 hours at the helm during the race). A series of 14 races, each with their own title. The first race, 'The Atlantic Trade Winds' race left London for Rio de Janeiro Brazil on 30th August 2015. The 5,186nM race is expected to take just under a month with ETA 26-30 Sept. Race 2 'The South Atlantic Challenge' begins in Rio 7 October and finishes 21-25 October in Cape Town, a distance of 3,417nM. Race 3 'The Southern Ocean' leaves Cape Town on 31 October, ETA Albany West Australia 22-26 November. From Western Australia they continue to Sydney, Hobart, Queensland and up to Vietnam. This year, sadly, the Clipper series will not be coming to New Zealand, but that's no reason not to keep track of this exciting race. Visit website 'clipperroundtheworld.com' to stay totally informed. There's a Virtual Clipper Race game for armchair enthusiasts and you can also track the fleet on their interactive Race Viewer. Millions of children around the world are suffering and dying needlessly. They're facing violence, disease, hunger and the chaos of war and disaster. The Clipper Race and crew are helping UNICEF, the official race charity, to change this.
Calendar of Events - always growing! Every now and then we'll include this calendar in the newsletter to keep you informed. It will be changing constantly as we add items of interest to it. We've added all the weekend keeler racing days, and the social cruising programme plus those races such as the Coastal Classic which will be of interest to many of you. The Friday night racing series is shown separately (above). All the races and activities of the SYC (keeler weekend/cruising/Friday nights/centreboarders) are detailed in the SYC handbook. (Now there's an incentive to pay your membership fees - to get the handbook!)
Kind regards Glenys Milne Publicity Officer
