Do you have any small native trees that you might be willing to donate to help implement the Sandspit Yacht Club planting programme for 8 Brick Bay Drive? As part of our resource consent, we must adhere to a stringent Landscape Planting Plan laid out by the Council which comprises of 376 plants across the following species: Titoki, Karaka, Karamu, Pohutukawa, Puriri, Cabbage Tree, Kahikatea, Manuka, Karo, Rengarenga, Sedge, Blueberry, Muehlenbeckia and Flax. The plan is to plant these out in April. If you can help to supply these, we'd very much like to hear from you. Contact Phil Brooker on 425 8775 or
We're still in the early stages of negotiations with possible new caterers. As such we can't give a start date to the SYC Friday evening dinners. If anyone is open to joining forces with a few other individuals to put together a simple yet hearty meal (say a shepherds pie and salad, or even something more elaborate) for 40-50 people, then give Glenys a call on 422-2479 or email glenysmilne@yahoo.co.nz. If we were able to provide a one-option meal, and took pre-bookings, we could easily pull this off. This would mean that SYC could open for dinners on Friday 20th and Friday 27th February – or at least until the caterers get up and running. Murmurings of our lack of opportunity for social get-togethers is not falling on deaf ears! Remember though, that the bar is open on Thursdays 4.30-7.30pm and it's a lively atmosphere down there these days. $2pp thrown into the big brass bowl will get keep you included in the rounds of deep-fried nibbles.
For those who may be interested in joining the SYC Centreboard Committee, there is a meeting at Algies Bay Clubrooms tonight (Thurs) at 7.30pm. The committee is small and needs boosting, so if you'd like to see what goes on, please do come along tonight. For further information, please contact Secretary Carola Corkill on 0273313161 or email syccentreboard@gmail.com. The weather has been kind to date for the budding junior sailors participating in the various levels of the Learn to Sail programme. Remember, anyone is welcome to come along to Club Day which takes place on Sundays from 1pm at Aglies Bay for fun afternoon of sailing in any kind of sailing dinghy. In comparison to the same period last year, our takings from those using the trailer ramp at SYC between Christmas Day and 1 February 2015 were up 62%!. Perhaps this had something to do with the fact that this year, we managed to have someone monitoring launchings over much of this period...? Thanks again to Alan Boniface, Doug Holt, Pam Eede, Grant Brown and others who kept an eye on things over the peak of the summer period.
A reminder that parking around the Sandspit area will be at a premium this Saturday with a big turnout expected at the 'Music in the Gardens' event taking place at Kawau Island from 2pm. Might pay to leave home 15 minutes earlier than usual to allow for this.
Thanks to those who responded to our earlier newsletter and contacted the Warkworth Lions Club regarding the 'Take A Kid Fishing' initiative. They still need a few more boats and would be very pleased to hear from anyone able to take a group of children out on their boat on Sunday 8 March from 9.00am-12.30pm. Please contact Lions Club President Angela Taylor on 425 0595 or 027 268 4992 NZSFC Nationals - Sat 21-Sat 28 February Run by the NZ Sports Fishing Council, this national tournament provides fun for anglers of all ages and abilities. Prior registration is required. Contact Brett Rathe on 422 7949 or 021 449 842
There's a Ladies Race on this weekend, along with a Cruising Division race, both to be followed by a BYO bbq at a yet-to-be-notified destination. We look forward to a good turnout for both races. If you've never raced before – well, this is a great time to start. For those not wishing to sail but want to join in with the social function at the end, you're most welcome. Get in touch with Sailing Division Convenor Jeremy Noakes who'll put you on the right track. Phone 425 6167 or

Found A fishing rod and reel was found at SYC on Saturday 31 January. Phone Jim on 425 0045 if it's yours. That's all for today. Fingers crossed this windy front passes before the weekend. Parting shot: What's the difference between a girl who is sick of her boyfriend and a sailor who falls overboard? One is bored over a man, and the other is a man. Happy Valentines Day! One of our members sent in this photo of the latest ramp entrance into the Matakana River. It's located on the northern side of the Bishops Hill Farm subdivision (off Whitmore Road), just around the bend of the pile moorings. Another floating pontoon of sorts is understood to be going in on the southern side of the subdivision, just around from Shark Bay point.
