SYC member Brian Meadowcroft passed away on 19 August 2015 in his 81st year. Brian was a very keen sailor and family man who enjoyed many happy years on the water with his extensive family and at their family home in Sandspit. Brian dedicated much of his life to the family's textile business in Wellington and moved to Auckland to open a branch up here. The business was sold in 1987 after which he and his wife Pip travelled extensively, enjoying retirement with Brian dedicating much of his time to charitable organisations with Rotary being close to his heart. Brian latterly lived in Remuera with his wife Margot, and was a loving husband for 54 years to the late Pip. The huge funeral held at St Lukes Church in Remuera on 24 August was testament to an industrious, affable and much-loved gentleman. RIP Brian.
We're on the hunt for someone to work in the capacity of volunteer, who might like to undertake what will undoubtedly be an interesting and rewarding project. Over the years, we've collected quite a bit of history to do with the greater business of the Sandspit Yacht Club. What we'd really like, is for someone to take on the role of talking with those who were here in the formative years, who have been been associated with the club over the years and have a story to tell. A lot of vital information is being lost as these members grow older so we figure it's time to take action. Could this person be you? We're looking for a good samaritan with time up their sleeve, who would enjoy interviewing these folk and compiling their stories in writing. Ideally, a small group working together could be fun, sharing information and encouraging each other along. Perhaps you have a story to tell? We invite you to get out your writing paper and jot it down - we don't want to lose the history! Even if you feel like contributing in a smaller way, maybe by interviewing just one or two people, then your input would be most valued. Talk to your Mum or Dad and get their stories on paper, or better still, get the grandkids to take this on as a fun holiday project. All contributions will be very much appreciated. We have a considerable amount of information with which to start, lists of office holders and members, so you can have a good read of all this before undertaking the role. If you're remotely interested in taking on this, or part of this role, please contact Glenys Milne on 4222 479 to discuss further.
Here's something different. Armchair Travel is put on by a group of people who get speakers in to talk about their travels. Recently SYC member and 'Ride Out of the Blue' cyclist Sally Smith gave a very informative presentation about her time with husband Alan in the Antarctic. This time, it's an informal talk and presentation by Leigh resident Tony Enderby about his travels through the Galapagos. This will take place on Wednesday 23 September at 1pm in the Brambles Cafe Matakana. To book your spot, please email gill@smithandwarren.co.nz or phone 422-6959. RSVP essential. Proceeds from this talk go to 'Friends of Galapagos New Zealand', a non-profitable organisation. Sailors and their canine friends Are you a dog-owning boatie who leaves your dog at home when you go boating and have an hour to spare to talk about your dog? Helen Ough Dealy from the Department of Conservation is undertaking a bit of research and has a few questions to ask. For your troubles you will receive some free dog food and treats and go in the draw for a mystery prize. Interested? Contact Helen at DOC on 09-4070308 or email hodealy@doc.govt.nz. Short and sweet.
