Please be advised that the annual General Meeting of the Sandspit Yacht Club will take place on Tuesday 11 August at 7:00pm in the SYC clubrooms. All members welcome. Consider taking up a committee position or one of the other volunteer positions; there are plenty of areas to choose from! We look forward to seeing all those we've not seen down at the clubrooms in a while. Handbook Only a handful of members have responded to our request to update their details as they currently appear in our handbook. If your details have changed in this last year (name, home phone number, mobile, current boat name etc), please advise Jenny Bronkhorst at the office ASAP. Invoices will be sent out after the AGM and we would like to think that these have all your correct details on them, as this is how they will be printed in the handbook. Advertising in the SYC handbook Louise O'Sullivan is currently putting the SYC handbook together. Those wanting to advertise in the handbook are advised to contact Louise ASAP. You have a little over one week to sort this out as the deadline for completion of all advertising is 31 July. Please email louise@warkworth.net.nz or phone 425 7021. Divisional reports, results etc for handbook All divisional reports and updates for printing in the handbook should be with Louise by the end of this month also please. The SYC clubroom bathrooms are currently being upgraded including tiles being laid. The bathrooms will be closed for the duration of next week (Mon 27-Fri 31 July inclusive). Those wishing to use these facilities will need to walk around the construction to the 'tractor shed', behind which you will find another toilet. You will note that the tractor shed, adjacent kitchen/office facility and surrounds are also undergoing enhancements. A huge thanks goes to Tony Merton, Colin Oldfield, Geoff Collier, Jon Nicholson, Graeme Maker, Neville Noyer and his off-sider Paul who have done such a great job with this enhancement.
As you all know, hardstand space and yard is at an absolute premium as we work within the growing constraints of the construction workers needing that space for marina-related work. The yard is effectively operating at full capacity at the moment. We're coming up fast to the end of the winter boating days and many are due for a haulout to tidy up before Spring. There's a flutter of activity with people booking cradles in the hope of coming up August and September to work on their boats - and there's quite a number of them in the queue. Let's be wise and fair and share the hardstand space. Those boats currently hauled out for whom it is not vital to be on the hardstand, kindly look favorably upon returning your boat to the water at the earliest opportunity. Only boats requiring under-the-waterline work really need to be up there. If you've got deck-work to do, consider using the work-berth. Centreboard Division The SYC Centreboard Division held a successful Open Day on 11th July giving loads of kids the opportunity to have a go at sailing in the club optimist sailing dinghies. Thanks to those who brought gear down to our bring and buy and to those who came down to support the event. The CB club is closed until early October with the season starting in earnest in school term 4/early october. For information during this time, please call 022 171 2550
The WWGFC AGM is being held on Saturday 1 August 2015 at 4pm. Visit WWGCC website www.wwgfc.co.nz for more information.
It seems that the high winds have a pattern about them, returning on cue each fortnight on a Sunday! Another race had to be cancelled last week so those who had taken the time to scrub off and get organised all over again, will have been disappointed. Moving along.... next race is scheduled for Sunday 2 August with an 1100hrs start off Algies Bay. The bar will be open and the bbq sizzling upon return of the sailors at approximately 3-4pm. Anyone is invited down to the clubrooms to join in the after-race festivities. Winter races are fortnightly, the next ones being Sun 19 July and Sun 2 August. For further information, email Jeremy Noakes on hawksnestorchard@xtra.co.nz.
Bar Volunteers Still keen to hear from anyone who can help out once every 4-6 weeks to help run the bar. Our bar opens on Thursdays at 4.30pm and closes around 7pm. It's getting busier and busier and at times, we need two people working the bar. Tony Merton is frequently the man who prepares the bar in readiness for the bar staff so for those considering volunteering who can't get there until a little after 5pm, don't be deterred as we can hold the fort until your arrival. This is a great way to meet people and have a little Thursday fun. To find out more, please phone Les on 021 412 708
Coastguard Boating Education Courses

Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series is the first stage of competition in the 2017 America’s Cup and begins today (23 July) in Portsmouth, England. Local outfit Core Builders have built all of the AC45s, being the 45-foot catamarans being used in the preliminary rounds. Almost the entire Oracle Team USA boat will be produced in Warkworth, as the regulations require a small portion of the hull to be built in the team's country of origin. Core Builders can also produce the wing-sails, hulls and cross-structures between the two hulls for the AC50s, which will be the boats competing in the 2017 America's Cup races which to be held in Bermuda. The main area of competition will be with the design of the foils, which allow the yachts to rise out of the water and hydroplane, and the control systems for the foils and wing-sails. All teams have been given an opportunity to host events in their home countries. At least four events are scheduled in 2015, including: Portsmouth, Great Britain - July 23-26, 2015, Gothenburg, Sweden - August 27-30, 2015 and Hamilton, Bermuda - October 16-18, 2015. Four to six events are expected in 2016, including a second event in Portsmouth in July and a regatta in Chicago during the summer. Keep up with all the excitement online; www.americascup.com.
Marina happenings Another timely reminder to be aware of the barge movements and stay out of their way. There are four barges working now and particularly on the high-tide, there are multiple movements in and out of the Sandspit harbour. Whilst there are slick operators on these vessels, please refrain from jeopardising their efforts by giving them a wide berth and being patient following them up or down the harbour - not overtaking!! Your continued respect of the movement of vessels and the area in which they and the diggers are working, is very much appreciated.
We thank members Sharon & Andrew Hamilton for sharing the launching of their new vessel with us: Lady Jade was launched on 13th April 2015 at Sharon & Andrew Hamilton's farm by the Mahurangi River. The hull was designed by Dave Jackson with Hamilton Boat Builders (Andrew and Grant Hamilton) doing the interior and profile designs. She is a 38 ft displacement launch with a 12.6ft beam and 4 ft draft, displacing around 10 tonne. Her fuel capacity is 1300 litres and water capacity 700 litres. She is powered by a 6LXB Gardner giving a cruising speed of 8 knots at 1000 revs, using 7 litres diesel an hour. She was worked on by Andrew and Grant over the last year or so. The hardware and engine installation was done by Andrew. The beautiful interior done by Grant is finished in American Oak. She sleeps 6 (1 double and 4 singles). She was named Lady Jade after the Mahurangi River, which borders the Hamilton's farm and also where she was launched and is now moored.
We trust you have enjoyed your newsletter. If you have anything to announce or share, then we'd love to hear about it. We look forward to seeing you at the AGM early next month. Warm regards Glenys Milne Publicity Officer Sandspit Yacht Club Inc.
