Pontoon Ramp Closure and Trailer Parking We have been informed that it is time to close the SYC trailer park which is the parking on the right hand side as you enter the SYC grounds. This room is required by the construction team for deliveries with large trucks and construction vehicles needing room to operate.
The Marina Society and SYC management apologise for this disturbance and hope that it will be kept to a minimum as they forge ahead with marina construction. If you missed the latest Marina Update, then please click here.
For those working on the yard. Commodore Bruce recently attended a Boat Haulout workshop where he was informed of the heightened attention in the industry to safety on boating yards. There is an unbelieveable list of do's and don'ts for this work place area and we'd like to point out just a few so that we can all keep an eye on each other and keep to the rules. There is now a restriction on where and when ladders can be used in the yard. A ladder (of sound construction) may be used to gain access onto a boat parked in the yard and this ladder must be tied on safely to the boat once the first person has climbed on board. Ladders are no longer to be used for working on your boat. All work on boats must be carried out on a working platform (builders plank between two ladders) or on scaffolding. One must wear the correct protection gear when working on their boat (masks, goggles, earmuffs etc). When sanding please use a proper extraction system. We urge you to take all reasonable steps to adhere to the above rules and at all times to ensure the safety of yourself and others. Look for potential hazards and eliminate such probability for accidents. If you have any questions, please talk with Haulout Manager Michael Blank on 425 5564 or 021 826 862
Report from Dave Adams: Ninety-seven anglers fished over the two days in brisk easterly conditions, with intermittent torrential rain for variety.
Wasn't 'cold' though. Fishing generally was slow but steady, with the tournament average over 2.5kg again this year. Our average in the 10kg is over twice as heavy as that of other competitions, testament to the fact our anglers are aware that a modest catch of good sized pannies is preferable to filling the bin with small fish. Also, by accepting that it takes a really good fish to be in the top 10 we have many anglers releasing 3 to 5kg snapper. The heaviest kingfish this year was like last year over 16.5kg, a great capture on lighter line. The snappers ranged between 6+kg at 10th place through to 8.8kg. Prize giving at SYC went smoothly and the meal (included in ticket price) was appreciated by all. Some of the catch featured in the meal and is a great way to celebrate the event. Sponsorship was outstanding, special mention to Penn Tackle and Hunting & Fishing Warkworth.
Thanks, Dave Adams. www.wwgfc.co.nz.
SYC Centreboard Division Prize-giving on Sunday 21 June 2015, 4pm A reminder that the prize-giving for SYC Centreboard Division is taking place at SYC clubrooms on Sunday 21 June from 4pm. All those who have participated in SYC centreboard sailing over the past 12 months are invited to come along. Bring a plate to share (main/dessert) for the meal A personal invitation has been emailed out to 2014/15 sailors, but if you'd like to come along, simply RSVP as below. Garth Naulls will be the guest speaker, talking to the younger sailors about his time in sailing and encouraging their participation in the sport. As the SYC Sailing Division (big boats) is having a race that day, many of these sailors will come back to the SYC clubhouse for their after-race bbq, and will also be in attendance for the prize-giving. It should be a good afternoon so please register ASAP to glenysmilne@yahoo.co.nz. Cash Bar will be open from 4pm. Resignation Hamish Mcdonald is stepping down as Convenor of the Centreboard Division, a post he's held since February 2014. Hamish is busy in business, he has a number of obligations beyond that and as his son no longer sails with SYC, he felt it was time to resign. So we're on the hunt for a replacement person to fill this role. If you're keen to head a small but dedicated team to run the centreboard division, to assist with putting together a sailing programme for the forthcoming season and strategic plans for the future, then please contact SYC Commodore Bruce Milne in the first instance. Phone 4222 479 or email bmilne58@hotmail.com. Perhaps you might know of someone who might fit the bill but they're not an SYC member? No problem, sound them out and have them contact us. Revitalising the Centreboard Division As mentioned in the previous newsletter, the Centreboard season starts again in Term 4, mid October. Without repeating all that was mentioned in the last SYC newsletter, suffice to say that if you have school-age children/grandchildren (9-18yrs) who are interested in sailing, then please get in touch. If you'd like to be kept informed with our updates for sailing in the next season, please register your interest by emailing glenysmilne@yahoo.co.nz. Advise (a) names of sailors (b) all contact details (c) preferred dates/hours of sailing (d) the level of sailing ability of you/your child and what you'd like to achieve. We extend this invitation to those you know who may not be current SYC members but have children who may be keen to take up sailing. We need to gauge what the wider interest/need is in terms of numbers and coaching required so that we can use this quieter period to put a programme in place. Boats change hands all the time and we have several people looking for new boats for the coming season. If you have an Opti, a Starling, an OK dinghy, Laser or any other small boat that you'd like to pass on, please email our Learn to Sail Co-ordinator Mischelle Mills on sandspitlearntosail@gmail.com. Sailors may need to spend a bit of time sprucing them up and getting some practice in before the next season so don't delay on getting in touch. For Sale: Sunbird Sail, hardly used, $400 ONO. Phone Des on 021 904 506.
A truly awesome day's racing was had last Sunday, enjoyed by eleven boats over a shorter course, across a range of wind strengths and sail types. Some very close racing up front with the leaders battling it out, with Dave Wade's newly launched high-performance boat 'Hi Jinx' beating Pulse by 2.3 minutes. The bar has been set! Smaller boats Scintilla, Rationalle and Jeff Cooper on his Reactor Sisken, enjoyed alternating as leader of their small group and enjoyed a challenging day. And those in the middle, well, it wouldn't have been a race without them! Well done to 'Hi Jinx' for taking line honours and to Scintilla for first on handicap (beating Arctic Lady by 3 seconds!). Thirty boaties returned to SYC for an enjoyable BBQ and prize-giving afterwards. Next race is on Sunday 21 June. The division encourages all boaties to join the fun, you don't have to sail every race, but you will need to register with convenor Jeremy Noakes. For further information, email Jeremy on hawksnestorchard@xtra.co.nz. Please be reminded that KBC is now closed for the winter season. The place is physically closed, no-one on site, builders expected in soon to start refurbishing. The club will re-open the weekend of 9-10 October. Until then, there is no fuel available for purchase at Kawau so those needing fuel will need to call Minitankers and have them come to the main Sandspit Wharf - NOT SYC wharf. Alternatively, fuel is available at Gulf Harbour and Leigh (24/7). However, do keep an eye on the Kawau Boating Club website as the committee are endeavoring to remedy the fuel situation over the forthcoming months. The clubhouse land-line (09) 422 8845
Designing a 'look' for Sandspit Yacht Club Calling all those with creative abilities! With the steady progressing of the marina it means that its time to focus on how the area around 'the entrance' will look. This is very exciting as for too long it's looked a shambles and even without the marina development, a revamp was well-overdue. We invite both amateurs and those with true creative flair to submit what ideas, drawings, designs they think may be worthy of inclusion, and these ideas can be built upon. So now's the chance to enhance the area. Not just the entrance but the various areas within the carpark, around the planting areas etc. You'll need to get hold of a detailed plan from which to work and these are available from Elspeth at the marina office. Contact the Marina Office on 425 0099 between the hours of 1pm-4pm Monday to Friday. We look forward to seeing you on Thursdays at the SYC club bar from 4pm. All the best for winter boating and fishing! Kind regards Glenys Milne Publicity Officer
