A reminder that there is a one-off dinner arrangement for this Friday, 13th March so come along and enjoy a night out with fellow members and friends. We will be making meals for sixty, so here's the trick: when you come down to SYC, head for the bar and in exchange for payment, we'll give you a coloured docket for each meal you order (colour denotes type of meal). You are then free to have a few drinks, secure in the knowledge that your meal has been allocated and will be ready for you at the time you choose to dine. On the Menu:
All meals $15, dessert $8. Half sized portions available. Bar open and meals served from 5.30pm. We look forward to seeing you there.
Due to the unsavory weather last weekend, this event has been postponed until Sunday 22 March. All those involved will have no doubt have been kept in touch by those from the Warkworth Lions Club.
We are scheduled to hold our Centreboard Division Club Champs combined with the Mahurangi College Champs this Sunday 15th March at Algies Bay. Weather permitting, this should be an enjoyable and colourful event. All queries to Carola Corkill, email syccentreboard@gmail.com or phone 422 9933 or txt/phone 027 331 3161. The Annual Algies Bay Residents and Ratepayers Cup is to be held on Sunday 22 March at approximately 1pm. This will be preceded by the weekly Open Club sailing in the morning to which everyone is invited. The R&R cup is open to anyone wishing to sail, be it a Frostbite, Laser, P-Class, Opti - even a bathtub. A fun event for all levels of sailing; the actual 'winner' is not necessarily the sailor first over the line. So brush off your old dinghy and have a go. No need for pre-entries, just turn up. Please contact Carola as above if you require further details. If you're free to help on the water supervising, or on the shore, your assistance would be very much appreciated. The Centreboard Division will be holding their monthly meeting tonight, Thursday 12 March at 7.30pm in the Algies Bay Clubrooms. All interested parties welcome.
Had the weather been better, the Richmond/Onerahi Yacht Club Route 66 race would have been a more enjoyable event. This is a 'short' long-distance race of 66nm from Auckland to Marsden Cove, Whangarei open to all classes and aimed to give those new to this sort of sailing a good introduction. Five Sandspit boats lined up for the 9am start - Floyd, Pulse, Scintilla, Island Style and Mischief Maker. From all accounts it was a tough race. Pounding into the wind for the first 10-11 hours to Cape Rodney, then light winds which shifted to the East for a tight reach towards Whangarei Heads. At the entrance of Whangarei Harbour they were back on the wind and fighting a very strong out-going tide which made for very frustrating sailing conditions. Those who finished got in, in the early hours of Saturday morning, snatched a few hours of sleep before breakfast, enjoyed a prizegiving and, in true spirit, reported an awesome kite ride back to Sandspit. Well done guys - and girls!
Most of these boats make up the 9-12-strong Sandspit sailing fleet. There were many breakages reported and with their wardrobe of wet sails needing to be dried out, and, coupled with the prediction of very strong winds, it was agreed that club racing would be suspended for the Sunday. However, the fleet will be back on track with the much-anticipated Lidgard Memorial Race on Saturday 21st March. We will conclude with a meal and a good catchup over at Kawau Boating Club. All non-sailors, launches and other SYC members and friends are welcome to join us. Stay in touch with Sailing Convenor Jeremy Noakes on 027 217 2588.
Of note, winner of the heaviestmarlin in the Whangaroa One Base Competition held 14th-18th February, was their 235.2kg Blue Marlin caught off Whangaroa by Sam Jukes, his maiden marlin. It was caught on a 37kg line and took 3.5 hours to get in.
And in the recent Nationals competition (21st-28th Feb), after a 2hrs15mins battle, they hauled in a 58.2kg Yellow Fin Tuna on 24kg line of Cape Karikari. To give an idea of the Tuna's strength and speed, Elusive was traveling at 8kts whilst bringing the tuna in to prevent it from getting in the props in an effort to snag it's line and escape. This catch took out the Tuna section on 24kg line in the Nationals and is pending the WWGFC Yellow Fin Tuna record.
They've also managed to tag and release two striped marlin this season. Supreme Effort.
(The 'season' by the way, started in December and ends late May).
